Introducing Fisher: Graeme Searle
Fishing vessel: Emma Louise
Main gear used: Anchored Tangle net and Anchored Gill nets
Main species caught: Turbot, Brill, Thornback ray (skate wing), Pollock, Ling, Monkfish, Cod
Graeme fishes out of Plymouth and fishes up and down the channel from time to time. His main fishing activity is “netting”. That’s a specific way of fishing by using either tangle or gill nets that are usually fixed to the seabed. It’s a very low impact fishery, as there are very small amounts of discarded or immature fish caught and probably half the time zero discards. All species he targets are fully mature fish, and this can be easily done by using specific size nets for different species.
Introducing Fisher: Aaron Lidstone
Fishing vessel: Happy Days
Main gear used: Hand Liner
Main species caught: Whiting, Gurnard, Bass, Mackerel, Pollock, Ling, Monkfish, Cod, Dogfish
Aaron uses mainly hook and line fishing with the intention of small scale netting if necessary at certain times of year. He fishes with a brand-new state-of-the-art 10 meter catamaran which is the most versatile vessel for his type of fishing. As quotas change on a monthly basis his boat gives him the ability to adapt to various different forms of fishing.
He believes his style of fishing is the only truly sustainable form of fishing due to the low impact of my work on fish stocks, virtually zero discards, low carbon footprint, and virtually no damage to the environment.
